Last week the UJEB 2019 Bat Mitzvah girls ventured out to the Dandenong market as part of their ‘Stand Up’ term. There they discovered a vibrant and multicultural corner of Melbourne. They took part in a fun and interactive treasure hunt, interviewed stall-holders and bought fruits and vegetables they had never tried before.
They also met Fawzia – a Sudanese refugee from Darfur, who is now a hard-working resident of Melbourne. The girls listened to the challenges Fawzia faced when leaving her home and integrating into a new country. She also told them about her favourite things in Australia, and the main cultural differences between Australia and Sudan.
The girls learnt a lot about the diverse immigrant communities who have settled in Melbourne and infused our city with a range of cultural flavours.
