UJEB is excited to launch a new vision and revolutionary high school Jewish Studies program that will be hosted afterschool at Glen Eira College.
The President of UJEB, Mr Yossi Goldfarb says: “UJEB at Glen Eira represents a major shift in Jewish education outside of the Jewish day school system. Jewish Education at Glen Eira offers UJEB teenagers an opportunity to form a solid connection with our community, and our community a chance to support UJEB’s teenagers.”
The Jewish Studies class will be held Wednesdays from 4:00 pm in the Language School, for Years 7-10, and will be open to any Jewish student. UJEB also runs informal lunchtime sessions weekly, including celebration of Jewish holidays as a whole school experience. Glen Eira College is not currently zoned, which means that any secondary student may apply for admission.
Glen Eira College Principal Mrs Sheereen Kindler commented: “We welcome UJEB’s contribution to the suite of multicultural after school offerings at Glen Eira College.”
Students enrolled at Glen Eira College can study Hebrew as a LOTE from Year 7 and Religion and Society in VCE. In addition there is recognition of many Jewish calendar events such as a Yom Hashoah commemoration and even kosher tuck shop items.
UJEB Executive Director Marlo Newton says: “Our research has shown that parents want meaningful learning, with an emphasis on Jewish texts, and Jewish history. The centre has been planned using experienced VIT registered and qualified educators and writing a purpose-built curriculum in Jewish text and history”.
UJEB has emphasised the serious academic nature and standard of the program, with a Certificate of Achievement being presented to students on graduation.
The new class is made possible with the support of the Alter Family Foundation and the Werdiger Jewish Education Grants.
