UJEB is not taking changes to Religious Education (RE) lying down! Today I met David Southwick MP, at parliament and had a great conversation with him about UJEB and the state government's recent changes to RE at government schools. He invited Nick Wakeling into the conversation, MP and Shadow Minister for Education. The discussion developed with enthusiasm and a generosity of information and opinion. We even proceeded to brainstorm ideas for pursuing realistic change in ministerial direction vis-a-vis RE in government schools. I am most appreciative of their time and willingness to help UJEB better connect to more children in our community. I look forward to sharing UJEB’s strategy with you in the near future. UJEB in schools Today I had the pleasure of participating in a round table meet-and-greet, at Beth Weizmann Community Centre, organised by David Southwick, a stoic supporter of UJEB. Guests included Senator James Paterson, Owen Guest - Liberal candidate for Melbourne Ports and Tim Wilson - Liberal candidate for Goldstein.
I raised the issue of the November 2015 change in ministerial direction effectively removing Religious Education from the school day. I explained that this change had made it considerably more difficult to engage Jewish students at government schools and, for many, this was the only opportunity utilised by families. All present were sensitive to the issue and expressed their support for UJEB and desire for a leadership change and an opportunity to revisit the decision.
We continue to be committed to offering Religious Education before school and during lunch time in as many schools as we can, in addition to our two After School programs at Caulfield Junior College and Merkaz Bentleigh.
